Smart Garage Controller Setup

One remote lives in a car you sold last spring. The other needs three presses from the driveway and its battery cover is taped on.

In plain words

The physical part of the job is modest and tidy. A hub the size of a deck of cards is mounted near the opener and plugged into the same receptacle the motor uses. Where the opener allows, two low-voltage wires run from the hub to the wall-control terminals; where it does not, the hub is taught to the opener through the learn button like an extra remote. A sensor the size of a matchbox is screwed to the inside of the top door section, and its tilt tells the hub the door's position. Then the door is cycled until the app agrees with your eyes.

The call
A smart hub arrived in the mail with a coin-cell sensor and two wires. The instructions ask what colour your learn button is and how old the opener is. Yours is over a decade old and the button colour is not on their chart.

How the visit goes

Technician kneeling beside white house siding, pressing a black rubber seal strip along a garage door side track.
  1. Scene 1

    Where the sensor will sit

The door-position sensor works by tilt, so it belongs on the inside face of the top door section, near a hinge line and clear of the opener arm, the lock bar and any handle. The technician checks the panel surface, since insulated steel and raised-panel wood doors have different flat spots, and checks the distance and line of sight to the hub. Homes with two doors need a sensor on each. On a door with a window section the sensor is kept away from the glazing frame. The battery type is noted, and the mounting follows the sensor maker's specified fasteners for this climate: screws, an adhesive strip, or tape as a temporary step before screws.

  2. Scene 2

Taking over a controller left by a previous owner

When the house came with a hub or a connected opener still tied to the seller's account, the device is first removed from that account if the seller can be reached, and otherwise reset to factory settings using the maker's documented procedure. The hub or opener is then paired fresh, joined to your network and claimed under your new login. Any sensor already on the door is checked for battery and placement and re-paired rather than assumed to be working. The old account is cut off from the door for good, and the history you see from then on starts with your household.

  3. Scene 3

    When the internet is down

A dropped connection changes less than you might fear. Your wall console, remotes and keypad talk directly to the opener and keep working through any outage. What pauses is the phone side: status updates, alerts and commands from outside the house wait until the hub reconnects, which it does on its own once the router is back. If you change routers or rename your network, the hub needs to be walked through the join process again, using the same steps you watched during setup. The door itself, and the safety features on it, never depend on the cloud.

What shapes the quoteDynes Garage Door Experts

Door and opener condition
A heavy, binding or badly balanced door is corrected before a controller is added. That door-side work, from rollers to spring adjustment, is quoted on its own.
The opener's generation
Some openers accept a two-wire connection at the wall-control terminals; others use encrypted consoles and need radio pairing or a small adapter between hub and opener. The learn button and label decide which.
Wiring route
Where the hub is wired to the wall-control terminals, the distance and route from hub to console, clipped clear of the chain and trolley, sets the time for that step.

The questions that come up

Is my garage less secure with a phone controlling it?

Done properly, no. Some hubs pair with the opener as a radio transmitter over the same rolling-code system as your remotes; others connect directly to the wall-control terminals with no such radio link. Either way, the account is protected by a chosen password and two-step verification where offered. The main risk is a shared or reused password, so the account gets its own and the user list is reviewed now and then.

The previous owner's controller is still on the ceiling. Can I use it?

Usually, once it is released from their account. If the seller can be reached, they remove the device from their app; if not, the technician performs a factory reset using the maker's documented steps, which clears the old registration. The hub and sensor are then paired fresh, joined to your network and claimed under your own login, and the battery and sensor placement are checked rather than assumed.

Why does the door beep and flash before it closes from the app?

Because someone closing a door they cannot see needs to give anyone near it a warning. The operator standard for garage door openers requires an audible alarm and a flashing light for several seconds before a door moves on an unattended command, along with working photo eyes. The beeper and light are built into the controller for that reason, and they are tested during setup so you have heard them yourself.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 47 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.A mixed-age neighbourhood is where retrofits are most common: safety cables added to extension springs, a torsion conversion on an older door, insulated panels replacing a hollow door, or a quieter belt opener under a newly finished room above the garage. Each is a routine job for us.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes sit together, the shared garage door on a small condo building may be a commercial operator on a heavy door, while the house next door runs a light residential unit. We service both types and carry parts for each.
