Garage Door Balance Adjustment: before you call

Since the new insulated panels went in, the door feels like a different animal.

A door you barely notice.

Since the new insulated panels went in, the door feels like a different animal. It closes with a thud, the opener labours where it used to hum, and lifting it by hand takes a proper heave rather than a fingertip.

Worth answering before the call

Has anyone turned up the force setting on the opener? Does the door sit level when closed, or is one corner higher? Is there storage or shelving near the spring shaft that needs moving?

My door has become noisy. Is that related to balance?

Often, yes. A door that has grown heavy makes the opener labour, the chain or belt slap, and the rollers and hinges complain under load they were never meant to carry. Balancing the door takes that load back onto the springs, and the lubrication and roller checks that come with the visit quiet the rest. A door that runs silently is usually a door that runs light.

I added insulation panels to my door. Does that affect balance?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons a door starts to sink. Springs are matched to the door's weight, and insulation kits, replacement sections, windows or a heavier seal add weight the original springs were not sized for. A technician can weigh the door and either add tension to suit it or, if the added weight is beyond what the springs can carry, specify new ones.
